Gautam Buddha International Airport (BWA), also known as Bhairahawa Airport, is Nepal's second international airport, serving as a critical gateway to the Lumbini province and the birthplace of Lord Buddha. Officially inaugurated for international flights in May 2022, the airport is located in Siddharthanagar (Bhairahawa), just 20 kilometers from the sacred Lumbini heritage site. The facility features a modern international terminal and a separate domestic terminal, with a 3,000-meter asphalt runway designed to accommodate wide-body aircraft. Its strategic location and upgraded infrastructure aim to relieve congestion at Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport and promote tourism and economic development in western Nepal. The international terminal at Gautam Buddha Airport is a state-of-the-art facility designed to handle a significant volume of both pilgrims and general tourists. Inside, passengers will find modern check-in counters, well-organized passport control and customs zones, and spacious waiting lounges. The terminal is equipped with essential amenities, including several cafes and eateries offering a variety of local and international snacks, as well as shops for souvenirs and travel necessities. The airport also features modern navigational aids, including an Instrument Landing System (ILS), allowing for safe landings even in reduced visibility conditions. Plans are already underway for a second, larger international terminal that will incorporate sky-bridges and further expand the airport's capacity. Ground transportation at BWA is highly convenient due to its proximity to both Siddharthanagar and Lumbini. The airport is located just 3 kilometers from the city center, a journey that takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes by taxi or auto-rickshaw (locally known as "tempos"). For those heading to the Lumbini pilgrimage site, the 20-minute drive is easily managed with readily available local transport. Car rental services are also available at the airport for travelers who wish to explore the region independently. The airport's sixteen international parking bays and efficient ground transport links ensure a smooth and accessible travel experience for all visitors to this important cultural and religious destination.
