Bender Qassim International Airport (BSA), commonly known as Bosaso Airport, operates as Somalia's second-largest aviation facility and serves as the primary gateway to the semi-autonomous Puntland region. Located on the northeastern outskirts of Bosaso, the commercial capital of Puntland adjacent to the Gulf of Aden, the airport functions as a crucial transportation hub supporting the region's trade-dependent economy centered around the adjacent port. The facility underwent major renovation and modernization, officially reopening in January 2016 with enhanced infrastructure and expanded capabilities. The airport operates from a substantially improved runway infrastructure featuring dual runways designated 1/19 and 9/27. The primary runway has been extended from 1,800 meters to 2,650 meters in length, with the width expanded from 30 meters to 45 meters and featuring 7.5-meter gravel shoulders on both sides. Positioned at near-sea-level elevation, the asphalt runway can accommodate a wide range of aircraft types essential for serving Puntland's regional connectivity needs. The facility operates daily from 0600 to 1800 local time, handling passenger, general aviation, and limited cargo traffic. The passenger terminal building houses all essential international airport functions within a compact, efficiently designed structure. Immigration and customs facilities process both domestic and international passengers, with the airport serving as the third-busiest in Somalia. Terminal amenities include check-in areas, departure lounges, basic retail facilities, and essential passenger services. Recent modernization efforts have enhanced runway lighting systems, upgraded navigation aids, and implemented improved security screening systems to meet international aviation standards. As a regional hub, the airport supports domestic connectivity to major Somali cities including Mogadishu and Galkacyo, alongside limited international routes primarily serving nearby countries such as Djibouti and the United Arab Emirates.
