Brownsville South Padre Island International Airport (BRO) serves as a strategic aviation gateway to South Texas, covering 1,700 acres at an elevation of 22 feet above sea level. Located just 7 kilometers east of downtown Brownsville and 4 miles from the Mexican border, the airport provides essential connectivity to South Padre Island, the Port of Brownsville, and the SpaceX Starbase facility. The airport's location makes it the southernmost commercial service airport in Texas, with quick access to the Gulf of Mexico and the US Interstate highway system. The airport operates with two asphalt runways designed to handle various aircraft types. The primary Runway 13/31 measures 7,399 feet by 150 feet, while the secondary Runway 17/35 spans 6,000 feet by 150 feet. In 2025, a major $35 million runway enhancement project began for Runway 18/36, which is being realigned as part of FAA modernization efforts. These improvements will enable airlines to provide smoother, more reliable service to key destinations including Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and Monterrey. The modern 91,000 square foot terminal opened in December 2020, replacing the previous facility to accommodate increased tourism and business travel related to SpaceX operations. The terminal features an efficient two-story design optimized for passenger flow and comfort. The first floor houses all airline check-in counters, baggage claim with two carousels (separate for domestic and international flights), and ground transportation services. The second floor contains the security checkpoint, departure gates, and passenger amenities, creating a clear separation between arrivals and departures. Passenger amenities include dedicated areas for families with a children's play zone, business travelers with workspace facilities, and nursing mothers with private nursing rooms. The terminal offers free Wi-Fi throughout, multiple ATMs, currency exchange services for international travelers, and shower facilities for passenger convenience. Two of the four gates are equipped with U.S. Customs and Border Protection facilities to handle international departures and arrivals. The airport completed a new long-term parking facility in 2024, improving ground access options for travelers visiting the region's growing aerospace and tourism industries.
