Qionghai Bo'ao Airport (BAR) is a modern aviation facility located on the scenic eastern coast of Hainan Island, China. Specifically constructed to support the annual Bo'ao Forum for Asia, the airport serves as the primary entrance for global leaders and business executives attending this high-profile event. In a significant development for regional connectivity, the airport was officially designated as an international airport in April 2024. Its strategic location in Zhongyuan Town provides a specialized and efficient alternative to the larger hubs in Haikou and Sanya, catering to the burgeoning tourism and conference sectors of eastern Hainan. The airport features a robust infrastructure divided into two specialized terminals: a 9,900-square-meter domestic terminal and a dedicated 6,848-square-meter terminal for international, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan flights. The facility is equipped with a 3,200-meter runway and an extensive apron with 52 aircraft stands, capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus A340. The terminal design emphasizes modern efficiency, featuring clearly divided functional zones for check-in, security, and departures, along with self-service kiosks for passengers with electronic tickets. During the annual Bo'ao Forum, the airport operates as a 24/7 high-priority facility, offering specialized Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) services for foreign-registered aircraft and international delegations. Year-round, the terminal provides a range of amenities designed for passenger comfort, including VIP lounges, ticket-booking counters, and various catering outlets. Travelers can enjoy a selection of local Hainanese cuisine and international refreshments before their flights. The airport’s commitment to service excellence is reflected in its role as a key supporting project for one of Asia’s most important diplomatic and economic gatherings. Ground transportation at Qionghai Bo'ao is well-integrated with the region's high-speed rail and road networks. The airport shuttle bus (Line 1) provides a direct connection to the Qionghai Railway Station, with a journey time of approximately 35 minutes. From the railway station, travelers can easily reach the Bo'ao International Conference Center or continue to other major cities on the island. The airport is situated about 15 kilometers from the main forum venues and 12 kilometers from downtown Qionghai, with traditional taxis and private car services readily available to ensure a seamless transition for both conference attendees and leisure tourists.
