Talagi Airport (ARH)

Talagi Airport (ARH), officially designated as Arkhangelsk Airport after the writer F.A. Abramov, is the premier international gateway to the Arkhangelsk Oblast in northern Russia. Situated approximately 11 kilometers outside the city center, the airport serves as a critical logistical hub for the country's Arctic territories. It is the primary base for Smartavia (formerly Nordavia) and plays a vital role in connecting the northern regions with major urban centers like Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The airfield's history is deeply rooted in polar exploration, having been established in 1942 as a military base under the direct supervision of the famous Arctic explorer Ivan Papanin. Originally featuring a simple gravel runway, the facility was a crucial outpost during World War II and the Cold War. It transitioned to a significant civilian passenger hub in 1963 and reached its historical operational peak in 1990, handling nearly a million passengers annually as the region's economy boomed.

Between May and November 2023, the airport underwent a massive reconstruction project that temporarily shifted all air traffic to the smaller Vaskovo Airport. This transformation focused on a complete overhaul of the primary 2,500-meter runway, which had not seen major repairs in over 40 years. The newly modernized runway is now equipped with state-of-the-art lighting and taxiway systems, allowing it to accommodate any modern aircraft type without weight restrictions, bringing it on par with the leading international airports in western Russia.

The passenger terminal has also benefited from recent modernizations, including the installation of new check-in counters and a revitalized interior layout designed for passenger comfort. A unique attraction for travelers is the on-site Museum of Northern Aviation, which offers a deep dive into the region's historic contributions to Arctic flight. Within the terminal, visitors can find cafés serving hot meals and retail shops that specialize in traditional northern handicrafts, such as bone carvings and Arkhangelsk gingerbread, providing a warm and culturally rich environment for those traveling through the subarctic north.
