Akulivik Airport (AKV) is a critical regional aviation facility serving the Inuit community of Akulivik, located on the eastern shore of Hudson Bay in the Nunavik region of northern Quebec. Situated approximately 1,900 kilometers north of Montreal, the airport provides the only year-round transportation link for the community's approximately 650 residents, bypassing the vast and roadless Arctic tundra. The airfield features a 3,501-foot gravel runway that is essential for the transport of mail, medical supplies, and passengers, primarily served by Air Inuit using specialized Dash 8 and Twin Otter aircraft designed for short-field Arctic operations. The terminal at Akulivik is a modest and functional single-story building designed to withstand the extreme subarctic environment of the Ungava Peninsula, where winter temperatures frequently drop below -30°C. It consists of a sheltered waiting area for passengers and basic administrative space for the regional carriers and community coordinators who manage the lifeline flights. While the facility lacks the commercial amenities of southern Canadian hubs—such as retail shops, restaurants, or ATMs—it offers a professional and vital environment where travelers are often met by local family members or community representatives. The layout is minimalist, with the gravel runway located just a few steps from the terminal entrance, ensuring that the transition from ground to air is as rapid as possible during the short windows of favorable Arctic weather. Operational activity at AKV is dominated by Air Inuit, which operates scheduled flights connecting Akulivik with other Nunavik settlements like Puvirnituq and Ivujivik, as well as the regional hub of Kuujjuaq.
