Current capacity handles 6.5 million passengers annually, though it peaked at 8.3 million in 2019. A major RM1.55 billion expansion project began in 2024, scheduled for completion in 2028, which will double capacity to 12 million passengers annually and expand terminal floor area from 55,000 to 115,000 square meters.
The expansion includes a new multi-storey car park with 3,400 total parking spaces, 28 aircraft parking positions (up from 16), 10 autogates for international processing, and plans for LRT connectivity. The terminal renovation will enhance passenger flow and amenities while maintaining efficient domestic/international transfers through the integrated design.

Penang International Airport (PEN) is exceptionally well-connected to George Town and the island's resort areas. Ground transport is efficient; 'Rapid Penang' Bus Routes 401, 401E, and 102 connect the terminal directly to the city center (Komtar) and the Batu Ferringhi beach area every 30 minutes for just RM 2-3. Taxis use a coupon system; purchase your ticket at the rank inside arrivals for a fixed fare (approx.
RM 45 to George Town). Rideshare app 'Grab' is also highly popular and often cheaper than standard taxis. The terminal is modern and handles regular international flights to Singapore, Thailand, and China Grab works well for George Town and the beach resorts because the airport is close enough that the ride feels like a city transfer instead of a long airport commute.
Arrive 2 hours early for domestic flights and 3 hours for international. Facilities include excellent duty-free, multiple lounges, and diverse dining options The late arrival bank is especially convenient for George Town and Batu Ferringhi, because the airport-to-city transfer is short enough to avoid losing a hotel night.
