Navigating the airport is exceptionally easy due to the uncongested and spacious layout of the single terminal. Ground transportation is supported by a large parking area with 400 spaces and local taxi services that connect the airport to Hambantota city center, which is approximately 18 kilometers away. The airfield boasts a 3,500-meter runway (05/23) that is capable of handling the largest commercial aircraft, including the Airbus A380. Its location makes it a strategic gateway for tourists heading to the Yala National Park and the various coastal resorts of southern Sri Lanka.

It functions as Sri Lanka Air Force Ampara (SLAF Ampara), primarily serving military operations while also supporting limited public use. The airport is situated approximately 8.1 kilometers (4.35 nautical miles) northwest of the town of Ampara.
The airport features a single, basic terminal building designed for rudimentary passenger processing. Due to its predominant military role and limited civilian traffic, it does not possess the extensive infrastructure or amenities found in larger commercial airports. The layout is straightforward and compact, offering basic check-in facilities and a simple waiting area before passengers proceed to the aircraft.
Amenities at Ampara Airport are exceptionally sparse. Travelers should not expect airline lounges, dedicated dining facilities beyond perhaps a very basic local vendor, or retail shops. It is strongly advised to bring all necessary supplies, including food, water, and personal items. As such, connections to the broader Sri Lankan domestic network or international flights require careful planning and often involve ground transportation.\n\nFor international travel, passengers will need to connect through a major international airport in Sri Lanka, primarily Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo. To do so, travelers from ADP would first need to secure a flight to RML (if available) and then arrange ground transportation to CMB, or directly arrange ground transportation from Ampara to Colombo. This overland journey can be significant, taking several hours by road or rail. It is crucial to allow ample time for transfers, especially for international flights, typically requiring 3-4 hours at CMB to account for immigration, customs, and security procedures.\n\nGround transportation from ADP to Ampara town is available via local taxis or tuk-tuks. It is advisable to negotiate fares in advance. Public transport options directly from the airport may be limited.
