Skardu International Airport (KDU), officially designated as a global gateway in late 2021, is currently undergoing a massive Rs 180 million modernization project. As of early 2026, the airport serves as the premier aviation hub for Gilgit-Baltistan, specifically catering to the high volume of international mountaineers and trekkers heading to K2 and the Karakoram range. The facility features a relatively new terminal building designed by international consultants to handle both domestic and seasonal international flight operations, acting as a critical link between northern Pakistan and major domestic hubs like Islamabad. The airport's infrastructure is dominated by its impressive 11,944-foot runway, one of the longest in the region, which is capable of accommodating large narrow-body aircraft such as the Airbus A320. The terminal layout is vertically organized to optimize passenger flow, with check-in and security screening zones on the ground floor and expanded departure lounges on the upper level. Arriving passengers benefit from a dedicated baggage reclaim area and modernized customs and immigration checkpoints that meet international Tier 2 compliance standards. The facility sits at a challenging elevation of 7,316 feet (2,230 meters) above sea level, surrounded by some of the world's highest mountain peaks. Amenities within the Skardu terminal reflect the region's cultural heritage and the needs of adventurous travelers. Passengers have access to free Wi-Fi, 24/7 prayer rooms, and a dedicated medical first-aid point. For refreshments, there is a central café serving Balti tea, coffee, and light snacks, alongside a retail area specializing in local handicrafts and mountaineering gear. For premium travelers, a dedicated VIP Lounge provides a more comfortable and private environment for a standard entry fee. The airport is also working toward completing a new dedicated cargo facility to support regional trade, particularly for the export of local fruits and saffron. Ground transportation at KDU is well-integrated with the Skardu urban infrastructure, located approximately 15 kilometers from the central district. The airport is connected to the city via high-quality road links, facilitating quick and reliable access for private vehicles and taxis. Licensed, metered taxis operate from the arrivals hall, and many major hotels and trekking companies in Skardu offer pre-arranged shuttle services for their guests. For those heading to the Karakoram base camps, most expeditions coordinate their specialized 4WD transport directly from the airport apron. Travelers are generally advised to arrive at least three hours before their flight, as the airport operates strictly under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and is highly weather-sensitive.
