Former main airport (ULN code retained), now backup/secondary facility since Chinggis Khaan International Airport opened July 2021. Buyant-Ukhaa now handles 2,000-3,000 aircraft movements/year, mainly charter, government, training flights. Original airport 18km southwest of city. New primary airport (Chinggis Khaan) 52km south handles 3 million passengers annually, modern terminal 104,200 sqm, 3,600m runway, duty-free shops, cafes, lounges, 1,100 passengers/hour capacity. 2.1 million passengers (2024). Nippon Koei contracted for expansion assessment (July 2024). Buyant-Ukhaa cargo: ~1,000 tonnes (2023).

Most commercial flights now operate from new Chinggis Khaan International Airport (52km from city). Buyant-Ukhaa serves as backup facility with limited commercial service. If flying into ULN specifically, expect basic facilities compared to main airport. Allow extra time for ground transport due to distances. New primary airport has modern immigration/customs, efficient processing. Cold weather conditions require appropriate preparation for outdoor transfers between aircraft and terminals.
