🏢 Terminal Information

Bucharest Aurel Vlaicu International Airport (BBU), commonly known as Băneasa Airport, is the historic gateway to Romania's capital. Located just 8.5 kilometers north of the city center, it offers a uniquely 'boutique' experience compared to the much larger Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP). The most striking feature of the airport is its terminal building, completed in 1952, which was designed in the shape of a three-bladed airplane propeller. This architectural landmark has been fully renovated and reopened to commercial traffic in 2022, blending its classic mid-century charm with modern security and passenger processing facilities. The single-terminal layout at BBU ensures an intimate and efficient travel environment. All departures and arrivals are handled within this compact structure, significantly reducing the walking distances and wait times often associated with major international hubs. Check-in counters are centrally located, and the streamlined security and immigration procedures mean that passengers can often move from the terminal entrance to their gate in a fraction of the time required at OTP. The airport primarily serves business aviation, private charters, and a growing number of low-cost scheduled flights, making it a preferred choice for those seeking a faster transit to and from central Bucharest. Amenities within the Aurel Vlaicu terminal are focused on quality and convenience rather than scale. While you won't find sprawling duty-free malls, there are several refined cafes and snack bars offering high-quality refreshments, as well as essential retail for newspapers and travel necessities. For business and private jet travelers, the airport offers specialized Fixed Base Operator (FBO) services with exclusive lounges, providing a quiet and professional atmosphere for work or relaxation. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal, and the historical ambiance of the building provides a more relaxed start to any journey. The airport's integration into the northern business district of Bucharest makes it an ideal arrival point for corporate travelers.

🔄 Connection Tips

Connecting through Bucharest Aurel Vlaicu International Airport (BBU) is remarkably straightforward due to its compact size and proximity to the city center. However, travelers must be careful to distinguish between BBU (Băneasa) and the larger OTP (Otopeni) airport, as most major international scheduled flights operate from the latter. If your travel plans involve a connection between the two airports, you should allow at least three to four hours for the transfer. The distance between BBU and OTP is approximately 9 kilometers, and while they are relatively close, the heavy traffic on the DN1 road can make the journey take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes. Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber or Bolt are the most efficient ways to transfer between the two facilities. For ground connections into Bucharest, BBU is exceptionally well-served by public transport. The Bus 100 (formerly 783) provides a 24-hour express service that stops right in front of the airport, connecting directly to key points such as Piața Victoriei, Piața Romană, and Piața Unirii in the city center. Several other STB bus lines, including the 131, 335, and 148, provide frequent links to various northern and central neighborhoods. To use these services, you must purchase an 'Activ' or 'Multiplu' transport card from the ticket kiosks or automated machines located near the bus stops, as drivers do not sell tickets. While there is no direct metro station at the airport terminal, the 'Aurel Vlaicu' station on the M2 (Blue) line is located about 2 kilometers away. This station can be reached via a short bus or taxi ride and provides a fast link to the southern and central parts of the city. For those preferring more direct
