Gimpo International Airport (GMP) is a major aviation hub serving the Seoul metropolitan area, positioned as the primary domestic gateway for South Korea. Located just 15 kilometers west of central Seoul, the airport manages approximately 28 million passengers annually, complementing the larger Incheon International Airport (ICN). The airport operates with two distinct terminal buildings: the expansive Domestic Terminal, which handles the majority of the airport's traffic, and the International Terminal, which provides regional links to major cities in East Asia. Scheduled commercial services at GMP are robust, with major Korean carriers including Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Jeju Air, and Jin Air providing frequent domestic connections to every major city in the country. On the international front, the airport serves as a critical regional hub, offering direct flights to key destinations in Japan, China, and Taiwan, including Tokyo (Haneda), Osaka (Kansai), Shanghai (Hongqiao), and Taipei (Songshan). These 'city-to-city' links are highly preferred by business travelers due to the airport's proximity to central Seoul compared to Incheon.
Ground transportation from Gimpo International Airport is exceptionally well-developed, making it one of the most accessible airports in the world. The airport station is a major nexus for five different rail lines, including Seoul Subway Lines 5 and 9, the Gimpo Goldline, the Seohae Line, and the AREX (Airport Railroad Express). These provide direct, fast connections to key Seoul districts such as Gangnam, Yeouido, and Hongdae, as well as a direct link to Incheon Airport. Taxis, limousine buses, and car rentals are also readily available. Despite the growth of Incheon, Gimpo International remains an indispensable cornerstone of South Korea's transportation network and a model of urban airport efficiency.
