๐ข Terminal Information
Benina International Airport (BEN) is the primary aviation gateway to Benghazi and the eastern region of Libya. Located approximately 19 kilometers east of the Benghazi city center, the airport acts as a vital lifeline for the Cyrenaica region, supporting both national stability and regional commerce. After undergoing significant damage during the conflict in the mid-2010s, the airport has seen substantial reconstruction efforts, resulting in a much more capable and modern facility. It features two primary runways and is now capable of handling a wide range of aircraft, from domestic turboprops to large international jets connecting Libya to the Middle East and North Africa.
A major highlight of the airport's recent modernization is the inauguration of the 'Berniq' terminal. This new facility offers a sharp contrast to the older, purely functional structures, featuring a stylish contemporary design with spacious waiting halls and improved passenger navigation systems. The Berniq terminal was built to international standards, providing separate, efficient areas for arrivals and departures, and significantly increasing the airport's processing capacity. It serves as the primary hub for Berniq Airways and also handles the majority of the high-frequency traffic from Libyan Airlines and Afriqiyah Airways.
Amenities within the new Benina terminal include several modern cafes and snack bars where travelers can enjoy traditional Libyan coffee and light refreshments. The facility also features a Duty-Free shop for international travelers, providing a selection of luxury goods and travel essentials. For those seeking additional comfort, several VIP lounges are available, offering quiet zones, refreshments, and free Wi-Fi for eligible passengers. The terminal is equipped with modern check-in counters, baggage handling systems, and a professional security screening zone. Ground transportation is centralized outside the arrivals area, with taxis and private transfer services providing the main link to the Benghazi metropolitan area.
๐ Connection Tips
Connecting through Benina International Airport (BEN) requires careful attention to flight schedules and the current regional security environment. Most travelers use BEN as a primary gateway for eastern Libya or as a connection point between domestic cities like Tripoli (MJI) and regional international hubs such as Cairo (CAI) or Tunis (TUN). If your itinerary involves a transfer between a domestic flight and an international leg, it is essential to allow at least three to four hours. You will typically need to clear passport control and customs at BEN, even for regional international flights, and the security checks can be thorough and time-consuming during peak periods. Ground connections from the airport to Benghazi city center are primarily handled by taxis and pre-arranged private vehicles. The airport is situated about 19 kilometers from the city, and the drive takes approximately 25 to 35 minutes under normal conditions. There is no comprehensive public bus system serving the terminal, so arranging a pickup through your hotel or business contact is highly recommended. For those needing to transfer to other parts of eastern Libya, such as Bayda or Tobruk, private car services are the most reliable method of transport. It is standard practice to agree on the taxi fare with the driver before departing, and travelers should ensure they have enough local currency (Libyan Dinars, LYD) as card acceptance for local transport is not guaranteed. Travelers using BEN should arrive at the airport at least two and a half hours before domestic departures and three hours before international flights to account for the multiple layers of security screening. While the new Berniq terminal has significantly improved the passenger experience, operational status can still be influenced
