Kigali International Airport features a compact, efficiently designed terminal that underwent major expansion from 2014-2017 with over $30 million invested in upgrades. The expanded facility includes an enlarged arrival terminal, extended apron covering 53,000 square meters with capacity for 18 aircraft, improved runway strip, and enhanced service roads. The terminal maintains straightforward passenger flow with security re-check required for transfers, and transfer desks located near the central security area. While the current airport serves as Rwanda's primary gateway, a new $2 billion Bugesera International Airport is under construction 25km southeast of Kigali, planned to commence operations in 2027-2028. The new airport will feature a 130,000 square-meter terminal handling 8 million passengers annually and a 4,200m runway, developed in partnership with Qatar Airways. Until Bugesera opens, KGL continues to efficiently handle growing traffic with its expanded facilities, offering lounges, cafรฉs, and convenient city access just 20 minutes from downtown Kigali.
